How win percentage is calculated
Without ties: wins ÷ games played × 100. A 12–5 record is 12 ÷ 17 = 70.6%. Sports standings usually write it as a decimal, .706.
With ties: (wins + ties ÷ 2) ÷ games played × 100. A 10–5–2 record is (10 + 1) ÷ 17 = 64.7%. This is how the NFL calculates it.
Other ways to count
- Soccer leagues rank teams by points (3 for a win, 1 for a draw) rather than win percentage.
- Some leagues ignore ties and use wins ÷ (wins + losses). To match them, leave ties empty and don't count tied games.
- Gaming stats (Fortnite, chess, card games) usually use wins ÷ games played.
