The rules
- Symbols are added from largest to smallest: VIII = 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8, MDC = 1,000 + 500 + 100 = 1,600.
- A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted, but only in six pairs: IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400) and CM (900).
- The same symbol is never repeated more than three times in a row, so 4 is IV, not IIII. (Clock faces are a famous exception.)
- V, L and D are never repeated or subtracted.
- There's no zero, and standard numerals stop at 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). Larger numbers use a bar over a symbol to multiply it by 1,000: V̅ = 5,000.
