How to use the Video to GIF Converter

  1. Drop a video into the box, or click choose a file.
  2. Play the video and click Use current time to set the Start and End, or type times like 0:12.5.
  3. Choose the Size, Frames per second, Speed and Colors. The line under the times shows how many frames the GIF will have.
  4. Click Convert to GIF, check the preview, then click Download GIF.

Keep your GIF small

GIF is an old format: each frame is a full picture with at most 256 colors, so GIFs get big quickly. A few seconds at 480 px wide and 10 frames per second is usually a few megabytes. To make it smaller:

  • Shorter clip: the biggest saving. Most good GIFs are 2 to 6 seconds long.
  • Smaller size: 480 or 320 px wide is plenty for chats and social media.
  • Fewer frames per second: 10 looks smooth enough for most clips, and 5 works for slow scenes.
  • Fewer colors: 128 or 64 colors often look nearly the same.

Many chat apps and websites limit GIFs to around 8 to 15 MB, so check the size under the preview before you share.

Which videos work?

The video is played by your browser, so it works with the formats your browser can play. MP4 (H.264) and WebM work in all modern browsers. iPhone videos (MOV, HEVC) work in Safari and usually in Chrome and Edge on recent computers. Clips can be up to 600 frames long, for example 60 seconds at 10 frames per second.

Private and free

Most online GIF makers upload your video to a server. This one does all the work in your browser, so your video stays on your device, and there's no watermark on the result. To turn an animated WebP into a GIF instead, use WebP to GIF.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a watermark?

No. The GIF is yours, with no watermark or branding.

Why is the GIF bigger than the video?

Video formats compress far better than GIF, which stores each frame almost as a separate picture. Use a shorter clip, a smaller size or fewer frames to shrink it.

Does the GIF have sound?

No. GIFs can't contain sound. To keep the audio, use the video itself, or extract it with the MP4 to MP3 converter.

Can I convert a YouTube or TikTok video?

This tool works with video files on your device. It doesn't download from other sites.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
