What's a good typing speed?

The average person types around 40 words per minute. Here's a rough guide:

  • Under 25 WPM: beginner, usually typing with a few fingers
  • 25–40 WPM: average for casual typists
  • 40–55 WPM: above average, comfortable for most jobs
  • 55–75 WPM: fast, typical of experienced touch typists and many office roles
  • 75–100+ WPM: professional level, such as transcriptionists and competitive typists

How WPM is calculated

A "word" in typing tests is any 5 characters, including spaces, so long and short words count fairly. WPM counts only the characters you typed correctly. Raw WPM counts every character, mistakes included. Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were right the first time. A big gap between raw and net WPM means slowing down slightly will make you faster overall.

How to type faster

  • Learn touch typing. Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;) and stop looking at the keyboard.
  • Accuracy before speed. Fixing mistakes costs more time than typing a little slower.
  • Practise a little, often. A few 60-second tests a day beat one long session a week.
  • Relax your hands and sit with your wrists level. Tension slows you down.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good WPM for a 60-second test?

40 WPM is about average. 60 WPM or more is fast, and 80+ is excellent. Many jobs that involve a lot of typing ask for 40–60 WPM.

What's the difference between WPM and raw WPM?

WPM counts only correctly typed characters. Raw WPM counts everything you typed, including mistakes. Both use the standard 5 characters per word.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes. Tap the words to open your keyboard. Expect lower scores on touch screens than on a physical keyboard.

Is my score saved?

Your best score for each test length is saved only in your own browser, so you can try to beat it. Nothing is sent to a server.

Why do punctuation and numbers lower my score?

Capitals, punctuation and digits need extra reaches and the Shift key, so they're slower for everyone. They make for more realistic practice.

Can I restart quickly?

Yes. Press Tab or Esc at any time, or click Restart.
