How to use the UPC Barcode Generator
- UPC-A is already selected. Type your 11 or 12 digits.
- If you enter 12 digits, the last one is checked. You'll see a warning if it's wrong.
- Adjust the size if needed. Keep the numbers under the bars switched on for retail.
- Download the SVG for packaging artwork, or a PNG for labels.
How a UPC number works
A UPC-A number has 12 digits. The first digits are your company prefix, assigned by GS1. The next digits identify each product, and the last digit is a check digit calculated from the rest. Every variant you sell, such as each size or color, needs its own UPC.
Where do I get a UPC number?
For selling in stores and on Amazon, buy your numbers from GS1 US (or GS1 in your country). Numbers from cheap resellers are often already registered to another company and may be rejected by retailers. For internal use, any 11 digits will produce a valid, scannable barcode.
UPC printing size
The standard UPC-A barcode is about 37.3 mm × 25.9 mm (1.47 × 1.02 inches) including margins. It can be printed between 80% and 200% of that size. Download the SVG and scale it in your design tool to hit an exact size.
