Dice notation explained

Tabletop games write rolls as NdS: roll N dice with S sides. 3d6 means roll three six-sided dice and add them. A number after a plus or minus is a modifier: 1d20+5 rolls a twenty-sided die and adds 5. You can combine dice, too: 1d8 + 2d6 + 3. d% is the same as d100.

Are online dice really random?

These dice use your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator with an unbiased method, so each face is exactly as likely as any other. Physical dice are actually less fair: tiny weight differences and rounded edges give some faces a slight edge.

Common rolls

  • d20: attacks and skill checks in Dungeons & Dragons. A natural 20 is a critical hit.
  • 4d6, drop lowest: the classic way to roll D&D ability scores.
  • 2d6: Monopoly, Catan and countless board games. 7 is the most likely total (1 in 6).
  • d100: percentile rolls for random tables.
