How much should I tip?
Customs vary a lot by country. These are common guidelines for restaurants:
| Country or region | Typical restaurant tip |
|---|---|
| United States | 15–20%, more for great service |
| Canada | 15–20% |
| United Kingdom, Ireland | 10–12.5%, often added as a service charge |
| Most of Europe | Round up, or 5–10% |
| Australia, New Zealand | Not expected; 10% for great service |
| Thailand | Small change or 5–10% in restaurants; often a 10% service charge is included |
| Japan, South Korea | Not expected, and can cause confusion |
Tip before or after tax?
Strictly, the tip is a percentage of the price of the food and service, before tax. Many people tip on the total for simplicity. Enter the tax to tip on the pre-tax amount; the total still includes it.
Check for a service charge
If the bill already includes a service charge (often 10–12.5%), you don't need to add the full tip on top.
