What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container, also called HEIF) is the format iPhones and iPads have used for photos since iOS 11. It stores a photo in about half the space of a JPG at the same quality. The catch: Windows, Android, most websites, many printers and older apps can't open it.
Private by design
Most HEIC converters upload your photos to their server. This one doesn't: the photos are decoded on your own device with libheif, an open-source HEIC library (LGPL), running in your browser. The decoder (about 1.5 MB) downloads the first time you add a HEIC photo, and is then cached.
Stop your iPhone saving HEIC
On iPhone, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible to save new photos as JPG. Or keep HEIC on the phone and turn on Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic, so photos are converted to JPG when you copy them to a computer.
PNG files are big
PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so a 12-megapixel iPhone photo becomes a 15–25 MB PNG. For sharing or uploading, HEIC to JPG is usually the better choice.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded?
No. They're converted in your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
Is the photo's orientation kept?
Yes. Photos are turned the right way up, as they appear on your iPhone.
Is the location and camera data (EXIF) kept?
No. The new file contains only the picture, so the GPS location and camera details are removed. That's usually a plus when you share photos.
What about Live Photos and bursts?
The main still photo is converted. The short video part of a Live Photo isn't included in the .heic file you export.
