How to use the EXIF Viewer & Remover
- Drop your photos into the box, click choose files, or paste with Ctrl+V.
- Read the summary: camera, date taken, camera settings and, if it's there, the GPS location. Red tags warn about private details.
- Open Show all tags to see every piece of metadata in the file.
- Click Download clean photo, or download all the clean photos as a zip.
What is EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is information your phone or camera saves inside every photo: the make and model, the lens, the date and time, the exposure settings, and often the exact GPS coordinates where it was taken. Editing apps add their own notes, and some cameras store their serial number or the owner's name.
Why remove it?
A photo of your new home, your child's school or your car, posted online with its location data, tells strangers exactly where to find them. Most big social networks remove location data when you upload, but many places don't: email attachments, messaging apps that send "documents", online marketplaces, forums, blogs and cloud links usually keep the original file. Removing the metadata first is a simple habit that protects your privacy.
Removed without losing quality
Most tools re-save the whole picture to remove metadata, which slightly lowers the quality each time. Here, JPG, PNG and WebP files are rebuilt with the metadata blocks taken out and the image data copied unchanged, so the clean photo is identical to the original, just smaller. Two things are kept by default, and you can turn them off:
- Color profile: tells screens how to show the colors. Without it, some photos look dull. It contains no personal information.
- Rotation: phones often store photos sideways with a note to rotate them. Only that note is kept, so the photo still shows the right way up.
Each photo is checked again after cleaning, so you can see that nothing is left.
iPhone HEIC photos
HEIC photos can be viewed here, but not cleaned. On iPhone, tap Share, then Options at the top, and turn off Location before sending. To stop saving locations at all, go to Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › Camera and choose Never. On Android, turn off location tags in the camera app's settings.
Frequently asked questions
Can someone find where a photo was taken?
Yes, if it still contains GPS data. Drop it in here: if a location is found, you'll see the coordinates and a link to the spot on a map.
Does removing EXIF data reduce quality?
Not here. JPG, PNG and WebP files are cleaned without re-compressing the image, so the picture is exactly the same.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Reading and cleaning happen in your browser, so your photos never leave your device. The map link only opens if you click it.
Do Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp remove location data?
Instagram, Facebook and X remove it from photos they show publicly, and WhatsApp removes it from photos sent as images. Files sent as documents or attachments, and photos on many other sites, keep it. It's safest to remove it yourself.
Why are there still tags after cleaning?
When Keep the rotation is on, one tag that tells apps how to turn the photo is kept on purpose. It reveals nothing about you.
Which formats can be cleaned?
JPG, PNG and WebP. HEIC, AVIF and TIFF can be viewed. Convert them to JPG first to clean them.
