How to use the WebP to GIF Converter

  1. Drop a WebP file into the box or click choose a file. Animated and still WebP both work.
  2. It's converted straight away. Compare the WebP and the GIF side by side.
  3. Change the Size, Colors, Speed, Loop or Background if you like. The GIF updates automatically.
  4. Click Download GIF. To get the individual pictures, click Download frames (PNG .zip).

Why convert WebP to GIF?

Animated WebP files are smaller and better looking than GIFs, and every modern browser plays them. But plenty of places still only take GIF: some messaging and chat apps, email newsletters, forums, older versions of PowerPoint and Keynote, and many upload forms. Converting gives you a file that works everywhere.

Keeping the GIF small

GIF is an old format, so the same animation is often several times bigger than the WebP. Google's own measurements found animated WebP files around 64% smaller than GIFs. To keep your GIF small:

  • Size: shrinking to 480 px or 320 px wide makes the biggest difference. Most chat apps show GIFs small anyway.
  • Colors: GIF can use at most 256 colors in each frame. 128 or 64 colors are often hard to tell apart and make a smaller file.
  • Background: a solid background color usually compresses a little better than transparency.

Transparency

GIF pixels are either fully visible or fully transparent, with nothing in between. Soft, semi-transparent edges in a WebP become hard edges in the GIF. If the GIF will sit on a known background, choose Color and pick that color for smooth edges.

Saving the frames

Download frames (PNG .zip) saves every frame of the animation as a full-size PNG image, numbered in order, so you can edit them, use one as a still picture, or build a sprite sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is the timing kept?

Yes. Each frame keeps its own duration from the WebP. GIF timing is counted in hundredths of a second, so very short frames are rounded, and frames shorter than 0.02 seconds are shown for 0.02 seconds because many apps play faster frames too slowly.

Why is my GIF so much bigger than the WebP?

GIF compresses far less efficiently than WebP. Choose a smaller size or fewer colors to shrink it.

Can it convert a still WebP?

Yes, it becomes a one-frame GIF. For still images, PNG or JPG is usually a better choice: try WebP to JPG.

Does it work on iPhone and Mac?

Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox, on phones and computers.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
