How to use the HEIC to JPG Converter
- Drop your HEIC photos into the box, or click choose files.
- JPG is selected already. Set the quality: 92 is close to the original and much smaller than PNG.
- Download each photo, or Download all as a zip.
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container, also called HEIF) is the format iPhones and iPads have used for photos since iOS 11. It stores a photo in about half the space of a JPG at the same quality. The catch: Windows, Android, most websites, many printers and older apps can't open it.
Private by design
Most HEIC converters upload your photos to their server. This one doesn't: the photos are decoded on your own device with libheif, an open-source HEIC library (LGPL), running in your browser. The decoder (about 1.5 MB) downloads the first time you add a HEIC photo, and is then cached.
Stop your iPhone saving HEIC
On iPhone, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible to save new photos as JPG. Or keep HEIC on the phone and turn on Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic, so photos are converted to JPG when you copy them to a computer.
JPG or PNG?
For photos, choose JPG: files are a fraction of the size and the difference isn't visible. Choose PNG only if you need a lossless copy to edit further.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert iPhone HEIC photos to JPG for free without uploading them?
Drop the .heic files into curlytab's HEIC to JPG converter. They're decoded in your browser with the open-source libheif library, so nothing is uploaded, and each photo downloads as a JPG that opens everywhere. It's free, handles many photos at once and keeps the orientation.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. They're converted in your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
Is the photo's orientation kept?
Yes. Photos are turned the right way up, as they appear on your iPhone.
Is the location and camera data (EXIF) kept?
No. The new file contains only the picture, so the GPS location and camera details are removed. That's usually a plus when you share photos.
What about Live Photos and bursts?
The main still photo is converted. The short video part of a Live Photo isn't included in the .heic file you export.
Will the JPG be bigger than the HEIC?
Usually, yes, by about 1.5 to 2 times at quality 92, because JPG compresses less efficiently. Lower the quality to 80 for files close to the original size.
