How to use the Webcam Test

  1. Click Test my webcam and allow camera access when your browser asks.
  2. Check the preview. If you see yourself, the camera works.
  3. Look at the resolution and frames per second, and the lighting tip under the video.
  4. Have several cameras? Choose one from the Camera list. Click Take a photo to save a snapshot.

Webcam not working? Try these fixes

  • Allow access: click the 🔒 or camera icon in the address bar and set the camera to Allow, then reload.
  • Close other apps: on Windows, only one app can use the camera at a time. Quit Zoom, Teams, Skype, OBS or the Camera app.
  • Check privacy settings: on Windows, go to Settings → Privacy & security → Camera. On a Mac, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera, and turn on your browser.
  • Look for a switch: many laptops have a sliding privacy shutter or a camera key (often F8 or F10) that turns the camera off. A black image usually means the lens is covered.
  • USB webcams: try another port, avoid unpowered hubs, and restart the computer after plugging in.

What the numbers mean

Resolution is the size of the picture. 720p (1280 × 720) is fine for most video calls, and 1080p (1920 × 1080) looks sharper for streaming and recording. Many apps limit calls to 720p anyway to save bandwidth.

Frame rate is how many pictures per second the camera sends. 30 fps looks smooth. When there isn't enough light, many webcams lower the frame rate to brighten the picture, so a choppy image often just needs a lamp in front of you. This test counts the frames that actually arrive, not just the number the camera claims.

Look better on calls

  • Face a window or lamp so the light falls on your face, not behind you.
  • Raise the camera to eye level, for example with a few books under the laptop.
  • Use the framing grid to keep your eyes about a third of the way down the picture.
  • Wipe the lens. Fingerprints make the picture look hazy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the webcam test private?

Yes. The video is shown on your own screen and never recorded, saved or uploaded. Photos you take are created on your device. When you leave the page or press Stop, the camera turns off.

Why is my picture mirrored?

Like a mirror, the preview is flipped so moving left looks natural. Other people on a call usually see you the right way round. Untick Mirror to see the real view.

Why is the frame rate lower than my camera's maximum?

Low light is the most common reason: the camera keeps each frame longer to collect more light. Other causes are a busy USB connection, a high resolution or another app using the camera.

Can I test my phone's camera?

Yes. Open this page on your phone. If it has a front and a back camera, choose one from the Camera list.

Does it test the microphone?

No, only the camera. Use the mic test for your microphone.
