How to use the EAN-13 Barcode Generator
- EAN-13 is already selected. Type your 12 or 13 digits.
- If you enter all 13, the last digit is checked for you.
- Change the bar width and height if you need a different size.
- Download the SVG for print artwork or a PNG for labels and listings.
How an EAN-13 number is built
An EAN-13 starts with a GS1 prefix (often showing the country where the company registered, such as 885 for Thailand or 50 for the UK), followed by the company number and product number, and ends with a check digit. The prefix shows where the number was issued, not where the product was made.
Getting official EAN numbers
Retailers and marketplaces expect EAN numbers licensed from GS1 in your country. Once you have your number range, you can use this tool to draw the barcodes yourself for free.
Size and printing
The nominal EAN-13 size is 37.29 mm × 25.93 mm including margins, and it can be scaled from 80% to 200%. Print black on white, keep the white margins, and test a sample with a scanner before a large run.
Frequently asked questions
How is the EAN-13 check digit calculated?
Starting from the right of the first 12 digits, multiply digits alternately by 3 and 1, add them up, and take the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10. This tool does it for you.
Is ISBN the same as EAN-13?
Book ISBNs starting with 978 or 979 are EAN-13 numbers, so you can make an ISBN barcode here by entering the 13-digit ISBN without dashes.
Can I make many EAN-13 barcodes at once?
Yes. Tick <b>Make many at once</b>, paste one number per line, and download them as a zip.
Is it free?
Yes, with no watermark, limits or sign-up.
