How to increase a number by a percentage
Multiply the number by (1 + percentage ÷ 100). To increase 200 by 15%: 200 × 1.15 = 230. That's the same as working out 15% of 200 (30) and adding it on.
How to calculate a percentage increase
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100: (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%. Note that going back down from 100 to 80 is a 20% decrease, not 25%, because the starting value is different.
Everyday examples
- Sales tax or VAT: a $50 item plus 8% tax costs 50 × 1.08 = $54.
- Pay raise: a $60,000 salary with a 4% raise becomes $62,400.
- Price rise: rent going from $1,500 to $1,620 is an 8% increase.
- Tips: a $40 bill with an 18% tip comes to $47.20.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 50% increase then a 50% decrease the same number?
No. 100 increased by 50% is 150, and 150 decreased by 50% is 75. Each percentage applies to a different starting value.
How do I add several percentage increases?
Apply them one after another: increase by the first percentage, then increase the result by the next. Two 10% increases make 21% in total, not 20%.
