How to use the Percent Off Calculator
- Enter the original price and the discount percentage.
- Read the sale price and the amount you save.
- For a second discount on top, enter the sale price as the new original price.
How to calculate percent off
Multiply the price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For 25% off $80: 80 × 0.75 = $60, so you save $20. A quick way in your head: 10% of a price is the price with the decimal point moved one place left, so 30% off $80 is $80 − (3 × $8) = $56.
Stacked discounts are not added together
An extra 20% off an item already 30% off is not 50% off. The second discount applies to the reduced price: $100 × 0.70 × 0.80 = $56, which is 44% off in total. Use the calculator twice: work out the first sale price, then use it as the original price for the second discount.
