How to use the Mac Keyboard Test

  1. Press every key, one by one. Each one turns green once it's detected.
  2. To test F1–F12, hold fn while pressing them (see below).
  3. Hold several keys together to check most at once.
  4. Don't press ⌘Q or ⌘W: macOS closes the window before the page can stop it.

Testing the function keys on a Mac

By default, the top row controls brightness, volume and media. Those keys are handled by macOS and don't reach the browser. Hold fn (or 🌐) while pressing them to send F1–F12 instead, or turn on Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys in your Mac's keyboard settings.

Keys a browser can't see on a Mac

  • fn / 🌐 is handled inside the keyboard.
  • Touch ID and the power button.
  • Shortcuts like ⌘Q, ⌘W, ⌘Tab and ⌘Space, which macOS always handles.

Caps Lock feels slow?

That's on purpose. Macs ignore a very quick tap on Caps Lock to stop it switching on by accident, so press it firmly.

A MacBook key doesn't work

  1. Restart your Mac.
  2. Check Slow Keys and Mouse Keys in Accessibility settings, which change how keys respond.
  3. For a sticky key, hold the Mac at an angle and use compressed air around it in short bursts.
  4. If a key still fails, contact Apple Support or an authorised service provider.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't brightness and volume keys light up?

macOS handles them before the browser sees them. Hold fn to test them as F1–F12.

Does it work with a Windows keyboard on a Mac?

Yes. Keys are detected by position. The Windows key acts as command, and Alt as option.

Does it detect the Touch Bar?

Touch Bar buttons are handled by macOS, but the virtual Esc key works.
