How to use the Chromebook Keyboard Test
- Press every key, one by one. Each one turns green once it's detected.
- Press the top-row keys too. Holding Search turns them into F1–F10, which light up the same keys.
- Hold several keys together to check most at once.
- Click Reset to start again.
Chromebook keys a browser can't see
ChromeOS handles some keys itself, so they may not light up even when they work:
- Brightness, volume and Overview usually do their job without reaching the page.
- The power and lock keys, and the Assistant key on newer models.
- Shortcuts like Ctrl + W and Ctrl + Shift + Q, which ChromeOS always handles. Don't press these!
Back and Reload are captured while Capture keys is on, so testing them won't leave the page.
Where's Caps Lock?
Chromebooks put the Search (or Launcher) key there. Press Search + Alt to switch Caps Lock on or off.
A Chromebook key doesn't work
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Recent versions of ChromeOS include a keyboard check in the Diagnostics app. Compare its results with this page.
- Check that the key hasn't been remapped in Settings → Device → Keyboard.
- If several keys fail together, try a USB keyboard to see whether the problem is the keyboard or the system.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't the volume key light up?
ChromeOS handles brightness and volume keys itself, so websites usually never see them.
Does it work on school Chromebooks?
Yes. It runs in the browser and needs nothing installed. If a school setting blocks the site, ask your IT team.
Does it work with an external keyboard?
Yes. Switch the layout to Full size or Laptop in the menu above the keyboard.
