How to use the Laptop Keyboard Test
- Press every key on your laptop, one by one. Each one turns green once it's detected.
- A key that never lights up may be faulty, or handled by the laptop itself (see below).
- Hold several keys together to check most at once.
- Using a full-size keyboard? Switch the layout with the menu above the keyboard.
Laptop keys a browser can't see
- Fn is handled inside the keyboard, so it never lights up.
- Brightness, volume, Wi-Fi and touchpad keys are usually handled by the laptop or Windows before the browser sees them.
- If the top row changes brightness instead of acting as F1–F12, hold Fn, or turn on Fn Lock (often Fn + Esc).
Letters typing numbers?
Many smaller laptops hide a number pad on the letter keys U, I, O, J, K, L and M. If those keys type numbers, Num Lock is on. Press Fn + Num Lk (or Fn + F11 on some models) to turn it off.
A laptop key doesn't work
- Restart the laptop. A stuck driver is the most common cause of many keys failing at once.
- Check Filter Keys and Sticky Keys in Windows accessibility settings, which can make keys seem dead.
- Clean around the key with compressed air, holding the laptop at an angle.
- After a spill, switch the laptop off straight away and let it dry before testing again.
- Plug in a USB keyboard. If that works, the laptop keyboard itself may need repair.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't my Fn key light up?
Fn changes what other keys do inside the keyboard and never reaches the computer, so no website can detect it.
Can I test the keyboard if a key is stuck down?
Yes. A stuck key shows as held in orange, and held now stays above zero.
Does it work on any brand?
Yes. Keys are detected by position, so HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI and others all work.
