Every word counts. Literally.

Thai Word Counter

Thai doesn't put spaces between words, so most word counters see a whole sentence as one word. This one uses your browser's Thai dictionary to count real words, and counts Thai characters with their vowels and tone marks the way you see them.

How to use the Thai Word Counter

    1. Type or paste your Thai text into the box.
    2. Read Words, Thai characters and the total Characters, which include spaces and punctuation.
    3. For Thai mixed with English, check Writing systems to see each language counted separately.
    4. Check Character limits before posting to X or sending an SMS.

    How Thai words are found

Thai uses spaces between phrases and sentences, not between words. ฉันชอบกินข้าว ("I like to eat rice") is one block of text but four words: ฉัน / ชอบ / กิน / ข้าว. The counter uses the Thai word dictionary built into your browser to find these boundaries. Some compound words can be split in more than one way, so tools may disagree slightly.

    Counting Thai characters

Thai vowels above and below the line and tone marks are stored as separate code points, but they sit on a consonant. The Characters count groups them with their consonant, the way you see them, so น้ำ isn't counted as three separate characters.

X counts every code point, so Thai posts use up the 280 limit faster than the character count suggests. The limit bar counts the way X does.

    SMS

A text message containing Thai fits 70 characters instead of 160. Longer messages are split into parts.

    Frequently asked questions

Why is the X count higher than the character count?

X counts each vowel and tone mark separately, while Characters counts them together with their consonant.

    Does it count Thai numerals?

Yes. Thai digits like ๑๒๓ are counted as digits.

    Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything is counted in your browser.
