Every word counts. Literally.

Hindi Word Counter

Type or paste Hindi text to count its words, sentences and Devanagari characters. A letter with its vowel sign, like कि, counts as one character, the way you see it. Hindi mixed with English is counted too.

How to use the Hindi Word Counter

    1. Type or paste your Hindi text into the box.
    2. Read Words, Hindi characters and the total Characters, which include spaces and punctuation.
    3. For Hindi and English mixed together, check Writing systems to see each language counted separately.
    4. Use the Character limits list to check SMS and social media posts.

    Counting Hindi words

Hindi separates words with spaces, so word counts are straightforward. The full stop । (purna viram) ends a sentence, and the counter recognises it.

    Counting Devanagari characters

A Devanagari letter often carries a vowel sign (matra), a nasal mark or a virama. These are separate Unicode code points, but people see them as one character, so the counter groups them: कि and कं each count as one. Some websites count every code point, which gives a higher number. The Hindi characters tile works for other languages written in Devanagari too, such as Marathi and Nepali.

    SMS and social media

    • SMS: text with Hindi uses Unicode, so each message fits 70 characters instead of 160.
    • X (Twitter): Devanagari counts like English, so a post holds 280 characters as X counts them.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does it work with Hinglish?

Yes. Hindi written in the Latin alphabet is counted like English. Mixed Devanagari and English shows both under Writing systems.

Why is my character count different from another site?

Some sites count every code point, so a letter with a vowel sign counts as two. This counter counts what you see.

    Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything is counted in your browser.
